The existing Dampier Cargo Wharf in the Port of Dampier - 2023
The new Dampier Bulk Handling Facility will encourage trade diversification at the Port of Dampier by opening access to a world-wide urea market.
The facility will be built south of the existing Dampier Cargo Wharf and will be supported by a new berth pocket which will be 13.2 metres deep, and a new vessel manoeuvring area, approximately 11 metres deep.
It will berth Supramax and Panamax vessels and support a shiploader and conveyor for the bulk export of urea. It will also accommodate general cargo vessels, cruise ships, as well as vessels supporting the offshore oil and gas industry.
Pilbara Ports has undertaken extensive investigations to inform the design of the project, including geotechnical and dredging investigations and berth operability and coastal flood studies.
The Dampier Link Bridge is a critical part of Pilbara Ports' strategy to establish and grow resilient direct shipping services to the Pilbara, and has been identified as the infrastructure solution required to:
The Link Bridge will be a land backed, concrete deck on steel piles structure located between the existing Dampier Cargo Wharf and the new Dampier Bulk Handling Facility.
Pilbara Ports has secured funding to refurbish the Dampier Cargo Wharf.
Originally built in the 1980s to support the construction of the North West Shelf and Woodside, the Dampier Cargo Wharf has not been upgraded since 1993 and has exceeded its original 40-year design life.
The existing Dampier Cargo Wharf will continue to operate while the Dampier Bulk Handling Facility and Link Bridge are being constructed.
The Dampier Bulk Handling Facility is being funded by the Federal Government through a Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF) loan and an equity contribution from the Western Australian Government.
In the 2022-23 Federal Budget, the Government committed $565 million for port infrastructure in the Pilbara to support emerging green industry and technologies. A portion of this allocation will be used to fund the Dampier Link Bridge and Dampier Cargo Wharf Refurbishment.
